During the summer, when the temperature heats up, it’s a good idea to incorporate some cooling poses into your yoga practice to balance things out. Cooling poses are those that invite the element of water, fluidity and openness, into our practice. Here are a few of our favorite yoga poses to cool you down:
Relaxed Lizard Pose (Utthan Pristhasana)
This is a great pose that allows you to stretch deeply into your hips. Traditionally this pose is done with the back leg engaged, but by dropping the back knee to the ground you make the pose a bit easier and you can focus more on the stretch.
Wide Chair Pose Twist Variation (Utkatasana)
This pose fires up the legs, thighs, hips, and core. By widening the stance you give yourself a little more room to move freely in the pose. I like to add a twist from the hips here by dipping my opposite shoulder down towards my leg, then switching.
Seated Twists (Ardha Matsyendrasana)
This feels so good and grounding, especially after working hard in a yoga class. Invite movement into the posture by breaking it into two parts: inhale to find length in your spine, exhale to twist deeper.
Corpse Pose on your Belly (Savasana)
This is a very soothing and grounding variation of savasana. It feels even better with a yoga bolster under your head like a pillow. Try it for five minutes and see if you feel more restored.
Do you have any favorite yoga poses to cool you down this summer? We’d love to hear your thoughts. Namaste.
