Relieve Stress This Holiday Season With These Tips

The holidays are the most wonderful time of year, right?  Though they are supposed to be, yet for some of us it seems they are the most stressful. Just going to the grocery store can make you feel as though you are fighting for your life. No matter who you are, it is hard to not feel the stress that comes along with the holiday season. However, if you play your cards right you can make it through the rest of this holiday stress, er, season and all future stress-related times easily with some simple relaxation techniques and our holiday stress relief tips.

Why Are the Holidays So Stressful?

We all know that stress causes the immune system to weaken, leading to things like anxiety, depression, heart disease and worse. So, why, during what is supposed to be one of the happiest times of year, do we let ourselves get so stressed out? Probably because we are too focused on creating the perfect dinner, the perfect gift and the perfect outfit; when instead we should be focusing on having the perfect time. That means soaking up your kids as they rush to the Christmas tree in the morning. Or how about telling a funny story so you can hear great-grandpa’s hearty laugh, one that you might not get the chance to hear next year. If you start focusing on living in the moment and enjoying those around you, you will certainly find that the holidays aren’t as stressful as you make them out to be.

  • Make a to-do list and check it twice. When everything that needs to be done is written out in one particular place, you can stay organized and prioritize what exactly needs to be done and when.
  • Ask for help. You don’t need to be a one man or woman show. Ask friends and family for assistance when you need it. Not only will help provide some stress relief for you, but it will also make them feel needed and happy to help you.
  • Learn how to say no. We all want to be a part of the festivities, but sometimes you need to take a break and decline so that you don’t run yourself into the ground.
  • Volunteer. Yes you read that right. Even during what may feel like the busiest time of the year, take time out of your schedule to give back to those in need. It will help you remember what is really important and increase your spirits in a very positive way.
