Practice Balance During the Holidays

The holidays can be a crazy time of of eating, planning, cooking, buying, selling, hosting, gifting, celebrating, traffic, stress, and joy. Often, our desire to take care of others and make sure everyone is happy can get in the way of our own well being and self care. We have some tips to help you stay healthy, happy, and balanced this holiday season.

It can be easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of going and doing during this time. Give yourself permission to say no every once in awhile. You don’t have to volunteer to host every holiday party, or cook the most magnificent holiday meals all by yourself. You can say no to some of the usual holiday obligations. And often, saying no to others means saying yes to yourself. Not hosting the holiday party might free up quality some time to spend with your family. Not cooking the most elaborate holiday meal might mean you can spend more time relaxing and caring for yourself. Giving yourself permission to say no to some obligations this holiday season might give you the break you deserve.

With the indulgent, rich foods present during this time of year, it’s easy to feel sluggish and tired. Counteracting this with some movement can be just what you need to feel energized and healthy. Make this time fun and enjoyable, whether it’s a yoga class, a walk or run to clear your head, a pilates class, or weight training. But don’t beat yourself up or push yourself too hard when it comes to exercise; allow yourself time to be still and reflect. Spend a few still, quiet moments each morning or evening in reflection or meditation. This stillness will give you the peace of mind to stay present during the holidays.

Those of us who are health-conscious often try to bring this consciousness into the holidays and make some of the traditionally rich and indulgent foods a little (or a lot) healthier. Eating well during the holidays can be a difficult feat, and often it’s a challenge to avoid self-judgement when we indulge in the less healthier options. Allow yourself to walk the line between eating healthy and indulging in holiday favorites. Eat lots of fresh, whole foods like leafy greens, legumes, and root vegetables, but also have a piece of your favorite Christmas pie. Life is all about balance!
