It’s January, and the New Year’s Resolutions are on a roll , or so we hope. Many people resolve to start practicing yoga in the new year, but it can be hard to know how to incorporate yoga into your life. Here are some helpful tips that we think will make it easier:
- Find a yoga studio and yoga community. As much as using yoga videos at home or online will work just fine, there is something about being in a yoga class with a teacher and other students that really forms a feeling of community. Try out different studios and different teachers, find one you love, and commit to going there at least twice a week. Committing to this will help you form connections and relationships with other yogis, and this will lead to a more consistent practice.
- Schedule out your classes ahead of time. Scheduling works wonders for your yoga practice. If you plan out your classes, and then sign up for them, you are much more likely to show up and do the work. Add it to your calendar! It’s much harder to cancel your plans if it means you will be charged a no show fee.
- Start slow. Don’t go too crazy at first or overbook yourself. Let yourself ease into a yoga practice so you don’t burn yourself out. Scheduling out 2-3 classes a week is a great place to start. If you think that’s too much. Just try one class per week and see how you feel!
- Be kind to yourself. Starting yoga from the ground up can be hard. You might be tense, tight, uncomfortable, sweaty, etc. Know that with time, the poses will feel more natural and the practice will start to feel so good in your body that your body will crave that time on the mat. It just takes consistency and patience with yourself. Be kind to yourself and your body. No one is judging you in yoga class, and you shouldn’t judge yourself either.
