November is the month of gratitude. It’s when we slow down and count our blessings. It’s when we stop and think about the people that are special to us and hopefully express to them how grateful we are to them. It’s when we gather with family and friends to share a meal and make memories that last a lifetime.
There is a lot of talk about gratitude, so we thought of 5 unexpected ways to express gratitude.
- Write someone a letter… a real letter!
Is there someone in your life you are extremely grateful for? Someone who you can’t imagine life without? Someone who makes your life better in many ways? You could call, text, or email this person and say thank you, but writing them a letter will be very special and meaningful. Taking the time out of your busy day to stop, get out paper, think about what this person means to you, and then express it with words, then mail that expression to them, makes for a very meaningful experience for both the giver and the receiver.
2. Cook for someone who could use a homemade healthy meal made with love
We all know someone who is going through a tough time. Maybe they are dealing with illness, or going through a divorce or breakup, or maybe they just started a new and difficult job or program. This person probably could use a homemade meal. Next time you are making a casserole or pasta dish, double your ingredients and recipe and bring the dish to their house. This is a thoughtful and very helpful way to show really show you care.
3. Pay for the person behind you next time you grab a coffee.
This is a great way to practice anonymous acts of kindness and express your gratitude for life in general. Next time you are at a coffee shop drive through, pay for the person behind you. It will likely only be a few bucks and will be an extremely pleasant surprise for them. They will probably pass on the kindness to the person behind them and this might go on for quite some time, creating a ripple effect of kindness for one another.
4. Buy your very busy friend a class at your local yoga studio
If there is someone in your life that seems to always be busy, working too hard, sleeping too little, etc, show them you care by buying them a class at your local yoga studio. This will allow them an hour or so of time just for themselves. Classes are rarely more than $15-20, so it’s a simple and cheap way to show you care and are grateful for them.
5. Treat yourself.
Or, treat yo’ self! Gratitude isn’t just how we feel about others, but it’s also about how we should feel about ourselves. Chances are, you are pretty great and deserve to be treated as such. Let yourself sleep in one morning. Let yourself take a nice long walk without your phone as a distraction. Let yourself eat that last cookie because you love cookies. Say thank you to your body, mind, and spirit for just being you!
